Clean Energy Transition

The Clean Energy Transition sub-programme supports the implementation of EU policies in the field of sustainable energy, in particular the European Green Deal, the Energy Union (2030 energy and climate targets) and the European Union's Long-term Decarbonisation Strategy for 2050.

The sub-programme has a budget of nearly €1 billion for the period 2021-2027, which aims to facilitate the transition to an energy-efficient, renewable energy-based, climate-neutral and sustainable economy by coordinating funding and support activities (grants for other actions) across Europe. These are actions with high EU added value, which aim to overcome market barriers hindering the socio-economic transition to sustainable energy, and which typically involve a large number of small and medium-sized stakeholders, a wide range of actors, including local and regional public authorities and NGOs, as well as consumers.

The projects co-financed under the Clean Energy Transition sub-programme are in the following five areas of intervention:

  • Building a national, regional and local policy framework supporting the clean energy transition;
  • Accelerating the deployment of technologies, digitalisation, new services and business models and improving the related professional skills in the market;
  • Attracting private finance for sustainable energy;
  • Supporting the development of local and regional investment projects;
  • Involving and empowering citizens in the clean energy transition.
